If you desire a special piece to be created for you our staff will confer with you to find out exactly what that desire is to create your personal product.Glass has held a special fascination for man ever since the discovery, thousands of years ago that volcanic glass- obsidian- could be made into arrowheads. From this ancient beginning, man has worked with glass to create both useful and beautiful objects for more than thirty centuries. The main ingredient of glass is silica or sand. Soda and lime are added for durability. Various metal oxides are added to the mixture to create different colors in glass. The term etching usually refers to the action of an acid on a substrate, where the acid erodes the surface of the substrate. Acid etching has its own attraction but lacks the clarity and dimension that abrasive etching produces. Here at Blastcrafters Etched Designs we use abrasive glass etching to produce our products. Abrasive glass etching is the process of abrading or eroding a glass surface in selected areas through the impact of abrasive particles propelled at a high speed. The design is controlled by exposing some areas of the glass to the blast abrasive while protecting other areas with a resist material. Areas protected by the resist remain clear and unaffected by the abrasive, while exposed areas become etched. Etched glass appears translucent, white and frosted; unetched glass appears smooth, clear and dark by comparison.
